Magicbird Creative: A Special Kind Of Company

Show the world who you are and what you stand for

There are a lot of joys when you start a business like Magicbird. Being overly excited over crappy business cards is a good example. As the cheap ink rubs off the cardstock in my fingers, I couldn’t’ help but feel a sense of pride and accomplishment. It felt as though having a business card made everything legitimate, like our business was tangible for the first time. I felt the same way the first time I looked us up on Google. Our little design business had a Google Business page like a real business! It’s been these little moments that make it feel real.

One of the realest moments so far was the first time explaining to someone that I have a business. As young entrepreneur, many are taken by surprise when I explain that my and my business partner have a business. Shortly after they recover from their surprise, they ask the question, “So what do you do?”

And for a while, I didn’t know what to say.

Magicbird Is A Lot Of Things

At Magicbird, we do so many different things for our clients. We don’t just do website design or graphic design, we also produce videos and manage social media. But in the moment, I don’t have 15 minutes to explain to each person what we do. I find myself at a loss of words, and stammer awkwardly to explain what exactly we do.

Even between Cody and myself, we bounced around so many different ideas of what we are that we ourselves weren’t too sure. We didn’t know of as term that fully described us, and we definitely didn’t want to create a term. We knew we weren’t the only company doing what we do, we just had to figure it out.

The first decision was if we were a firm or agency. Most people prefer the word agency, but Cody and I aren’t independent agents working together. We don’t sell Magicbird services independently. Magicbird full team, we work together as a team, and we help our clients together as a team. You can’t have Magic without Bird (it’s a basketball thing). We approach each of our client’s needs together, and this has become an integral part of who we are.

Now that we knew we are a firm, the next question was what kind of firm Magicbird would be. This really came down to the services we would provide. Of course, we couldn’t list every service we would provide, nor do we need to. We just needed to decided on the services that would be definitive for us, which was infinitely harder than expected. As we looked at our clients needs, we know that they see all of our services important, it just depends on their specific needs at the moment. As we created ideas, and debated them, one word continued to stand out: branding.

Our Focus Is Branding

Branding is one of those words where everyone has their own definition. It’s almost like art. Everyone knows what it is, but no one can really define it fully. And the more we researched branding, the more confused and frustrated we were. How are you supposed to receive a high caliber project when companies are debating between themselves on what a brand is? The truth is you cannot.

For us at Magicbird , branding isn’t just a visual style that represents the company. We feel that that definition of branding is only one aspect of a brand. We take our definition of what branding is from Marty Neumeier’s book The Brand Gap. He says that a brand is “a person’s gut feeling about a product, service, or company. It’s not what YOU say it is. It’s what THEY say it is.” We wholeheartedly agree with that.

At Magicbird we believe that a brand is the central message that people understand about a business. To help people understand that, we know that a visual design just won’t cut it. We know that a website, logo, or advertisement really isn’t sufficient. What our client needs is really someone who understands all of that is connected together, and that they can trust to work several aspects at once. So we focus on the whole thing, and the word “brand” covers everything that we do. And this whole process of developing and implementing this message across several mediums is called branding. This process is what Marty Neumeier describes as “the process of connecting good strategy with good creativity. It’s not the process of connecting good strategy with poor creativity, poor strategy with good creativity, or poor strategy with poor creativity.”

We Are Experts At What We Do

We consider ourselves experts in brand design and strategy not just because we know a lot about branding, but because we interact with brands on a very personal level every day. Not only do we manage our own brand (it would be pretty embarrassing if we didn’t), we watch, study, and learn from other brands seen around the world. At Magicbird, we don’t just look at the new iPhone, but watch the trajectory Apple is on. We study trends in Google becoming a hardware company, Netflix diving deeper into content creation. We look at how churches are impacting neighborhoods, and how politicians are gathering followers. Then with all of this studying, we consult and implement it into your brand, and teach you how to implement these strategies as well.

Branding is still a big word to handle. And it doesn’t help our clients understand what we do much more than any other term. So we break it down practically. As our team at Magicbird looks at branding, our focus as a firm is on digital design and production, meaning design for technology. As we create videos, images, and other various pieces of content, we are looking at the ever-changing aspect ratios on social media; how well an image will look on your phone, laptop, and tablet; how small a file can be for ease of access; website usability on all platforms; and rapidly changing digital trends. As designers and producers in a digital age, our biggest focus is how we can bring creativity directly to the hands of your users and customers. And so far, it’s worked really well.

With a focus on connectivity and relations between projects, you can be assured that our team at Magicbird of branding consultants will keep your business, organization, or church on their central message they want to convey. It’s our job to ensure that not only do your customers have the best experience possible with you, but that they desire to see you grow and reach more people. And we believe that Magicbird is the firm that can make that happen.
